Where are the phones with four antennas?  Ericsson and Telstra used 5 carriers for a gig last year; Deutsche Telkom with Huawei now announced their "field" test with 5 carriers. SK in Korea and Telstra promise the gig in 2016; AT&T in "12-18 months" (Tom Keathley.) No one will be surprised if those schedules slip, or if the first "deployments" are more like field tests. But it's coming.  

As far as I know, none of these networks are actually delivering more than 400 megabits peak today. Since 2009, LTE has been planned for 100 MHz of spectrum, 8 antennas at both transmitter and receiver, and other improvements to reach far beyond the gigabit. 

Your speed will vary. The cell edge will be 90% slower; some windows and walls can be equally devastating.

Mobile communications speed breakthrough achieved in Berlin

What was previously only possible under laboratory conditions is now available in the wild as of today: Deutsche Telekom and Huawei have breached the one-gigabit speed barrier for mobile data transfers in the LTE network. During a live demonstration in Berlin they succeeded in transmitting data with 1,22 Gbps via mobile radio.

In 2010, DT began paving the way to the gigabit society. Since then, fixed-network customers in particular have increasingly benefited from fast connection speeds. Together with Huawei, Deutsche Telekom has now achieved a breakthrough in Berlin for its mobile customers as well.

The more high-quality video people retrieve on their smartphones, the more data has to be transported through the mobile networks. The same applies to live streams and detail-rich games. These constantly increasing demands are driving the evolution of the LTE wireless technology forward on the way to 5G.

Deutsche Telekom and Huawei used the latest evolutionary step of this technology – LTE Advanced Pro – with a conventional mobile base station, which was bundled with a small cell solution; the data traffic flowed over five carrier frequencies instead of just one. This required one thing above all from both the transmitter station and the receiving devices: they have to support 4x4 MIMO (multiple input – multiple output) technology. If all these components are used, individual users can enjoy peak speeds of more than 1 Gbps. Wireless capacities in the equipped cells are also improved greatly for all users.

The current move by Deutsche Telekom and Huawei represents the next step in a long-term innovation collaboration in the development of mobile communications technologies and the roll-out of Germany's fastest LTE network. In an earlier test last year, the two companies bundled three carrier frequencies in Berlin, reaching speeds of over 340 Megabit per second. They have now beaten this record by far, taking an enormous step toward creating the gigabit society together.

Welcome On Oct 1, 2019 Verizon turned on the first $20B 5G mmWave network with extraordinary hopes. The actual early results have been dismal. Good engineers tell me that will change. Meanwhile, the hype is unreal. Time for reporting closer to the truth.

The estimates you hear about 5G costs are wildly exaggerated. Verizon is building the most advanced wireless network while reducing capex. Deutsche Telekom and Orange/France Telecom also confirm they won't raise capex.

Massive MIMO in either 4G or "5G" can increase capacity 3X to 7X, including putting 2.3 GHz to 4.2 GHz to use. Carrier Aggregation, 256 QAM, and other tools double and triple that. Verizon sees cost/bit dropping 40% per year.

Cisco & others see traffic growth slowing to 30%/year or less.  I infer overcapacity almost everywhere.  

Believe it or not, 80% of 5G (mid-band) for several years will be slower than good 4G, which is more developed.
